About

“We all spend the first eternal dream-time of our lives in the same internal mother ocean so even after we have lost our gills and dived into the world we are forever water-babies”. (Roger Deacon)

Ilse Black is a Dorset based artist and illustrator who works with ceramics and mixed media imagery, including digital.

Ilse’s work is inspired by being a human in the ocean environment. She is inspired by the joy and sense of play she experiences while in the sea. Her interest in finding and identifying species of aquatic life are an important part of her designs, reflecting her passion for ocean conservation.

She is interested in the altered sense of self as we move through water, freed from gravity and supported by the watery element.

She draws on the enhanced physical sensations as we glide through the water to create her distorted and exaggerated figures.
